Every day you spend on the open road, you face a variety of hazards. That’s why RV insurance is so important. But if you do encounter an accident or other damages, are you prepared to file a claim? People that are lucky enough to have never filed a claim before may not know what to do, or how they can help streamline the process and ensure the highest possible reimbursement check. We’ve compiled some information to set you on the right track.
Photo Documentation
Whenever filing a claim, it’s always important to show proof to back up the story you’re telling. Before heading out on a trip, take pictures of both the exterior and interior of your RV from several angles. Try to capture the details to serve as proof of the pre-loss condition of the vehicle. If an accident or other loss occurs on your trip, take more photos of the damage so you can show your insurance provider before and after photos. This helps establish the damages that were caused by the claimed event.
Receipts
Keep all of the receipts associated with your RV in a file. This includes maintenance, repairs, upgrades and custom equipment. Records for maintenance and repairs proves that you keep your RV in good condition. However, upgrades and custom additions may increase the value of your RV. The receipts are further proof—beyond your photos—of the condition of your vehicle. But keep in mind, a standard RV insurance may not cover custom upgrades. Be sure to speak to your agent to specifically add the right amount of coverage to your policy.
Accidents
Spend some time to familiarize yourself with the proper steps to take in the event you are involved in an accident.
-
Call 911 to report any injuries and the accident itself. Make sure the police write up an accident report even if the incident was minor.
-
Move the vehicles off the main road if it’s safe to do so. This helps alleviate traffic, which allows the authorities to reach you faster.
-
Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver(s). Be sure to get contact information from any witnesses as well.
-
Take photos of the damage to all vehicles involved.
-
Call your independent insurance agent to begin the claims process as soon as possible.
With a little bit more insight into the claims process, you can maximize your chances of getting the payout you deserve.
